Losing Momentum

GBP: The British Pound weakened sharply after disappointing UK labour market data reinforced expectations of a Bank of England rate cut in December. Employment fell for a second month, unemployment climbed to 5%, and wage growth slowed notably. Economists warned the figures confirm a loss of economic momentum. Ultimately, markets now see easing as inevitable, leaving Sterling under pressure amid fading investor confidence and looming fiscal concerns.

EUR: The Euro gained modestly as optimism grew in Europe following news that carmakers secured vital Chinese chip supplies, averting production halts. This boosted confidence, while ECB Vice President Luis de Guindos said current rates are appropriate, suggesting no near-term cuts. However, geopolitical tensions from drone activity in Belgium tempered sentiment. Looking forward, analysts expect upcoming German data to provide further direction for the single currency.

USD: The U.S. Dollar edged lower amid optimism that the prolonged government shutdown is nearing an end, reducing demand for safe-haven assets. The resumption of official data releases is expected to clarify economic trends and potentially strengthen the case for Federal Reserve rate cuts. Analysts cautioned that softer labour and inflation indicators could undermine recent Dollar strength, creating renewed volatility in currency markets.
