Cooling Prices
GBP: The British Pound remains under pressure after UK inflation fell to 3% in January, down from 3.4%. Unemployment has risen and wage growth has slowed, reinforcing expectations of a Bank of England rate cut in March. While lower inflation is good news for households, it reduces support for the currency. Sterling has already weakened this month and softer price data is unlikely to trigger a meaningful recovery in the near term.
EUR: The Euro is slightly softer today, with limited fresh Eurozone news driving movement. Industrial output fell in December, confirming that parts of the economy remain weak. There are also reports that ECB President Christine Lagarde may step down before her term ends, although this has not caused major market reaction. For now, the euro is taking its direction mainly from US developments rather than domestic data.
USD: The US Dollar is steady as investors digest recent US inflation and jobs data. Strong employment figures have reduced expectations of near-term rate cuts, offering some support to the currency. Markets now look ahead to the Federal Reserve meeting minutes later today for clues on policy thinking. Broader sentiment remains cautious, with geopolitical headlines and US growth prospects continuing to influence short-term Dollar moves.
