Cautious Optimism

GBP: The British Pound edged higher on Thursday but remained largely rangebound, supported mainly by improved global risk sentiment rather than domestic factors. With little UK economic data to guide trading, stable gilt yields left the Pound reacting to external developments. Investor focus is now shifting to comments from Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey, as any cautious signals on future interest-rate policy could influence the Pound’s direction heading into the weekend.

EUR: The Euro traded without a clear direction on Thursday as investors assessed mixed Eurozone economic data. Weaker retail sales highlighted ongoing pressure on consumer spending, though an upward revision to the previous month’s figures helped limit concern. The single currency also found support from improved geopolitical sentiment and reduced demand for safe-haven assets. Attention now turns to the final first-quarter GDP estimate, with sluggish regional growth remaining a key concern.

USD: The US Dollar weakened on Thursday as improving investor confidence reduced demand for defensive assets. Optimism followed progress towards a diplomatic solution in the Middle East, although gains in market sentiment were tempered by uncertainty over the durability of the ceasefire. Losses remained limited as traders avoided major positions ahead of the latest US labour market report, which could influence expectations for future monetary policy and the Dollar’s near-term outlook.
